Following a 28-year career as an appraiser, review appraiser, and appraisal project coordinator for the Iowa Department of Transportation, Joe retired from the agency in 2025 and started Anderson Valuation Consulting. During his career with IDOT Joe led a wide range of valuation, planning, coordination, and administrative functions for the agency, supporting property acquisitions and disposals for hundreds of highway improvement projects. While with IDOT Joe worked in all ninety-nine counties and every metropolitan area of Iowa, gaining knowledge and experience appraising a wide variety of property types including agricultural, commercial, industrial, residential, vacant land, and special-use properties.
Additional Professional Experience
Prior to his career with IDOT Joe acquired valuation experience during employment with the Marshalltown City Assessor’s Office, Hayes Appraisal Associates, Vanguard Appraisals, and the Story County Assessor’s Office. Joe is currently a member of the Conference Boards for Story County Assessor and the City of Ames Assessor. Altogether, Joe brings almost 40 years of diverse real property valuation experience to Anderson Valuation Consulting.

Joe is a long-time member of the International Right of Way Association. The International Right of Way Association (IRWA) is a global organization of more than 7,500 dedicated right of way professionals in 15 countries. Recognized as a leading education provider in the industry, IRWA elevates right of way professionals to make a powerful difference in their communities.

Joe has earned the Senior Right of Way Professional (SR/WA) and Appraisal Certification (R/W-AC) credentials through IRWA. The SR/WA is the most prestigious professional designation in the right of way industry. SR/WA designated members represent the most seasoned professionals who have acquired the highest level of knowledge and expertise within all the major disciplines of the right of way industry. R/W-AC certification recognizes extraordinary skill and proficiency specifically in the appraisal discipline. Both the SR/WA and R/W-AC credentials are earned through experience, education, and examination.
